Seals face multifaceted tests in the manufacture of foods and beverages. At the same time, hygiene and the greatest possible cleanliness are always the top priority. In breweries, seals have to withstand wort, beerstone and the essential oils of hops. In dairies, they have to withstand fatty and protein-containing products long-term.

In the production of chocolate, fatty ingredients are sometimes heated to a very high temperature. Seals used in ice cream production cope with extreme temperature fluctuations. Pieces of fruit and crystallized sugar are a source of seal abrasion in the production of jams. When convenience goods are produced, seals must often offer substantial low temperature flexibility.

The specific requirements of this industry calls for segment-specific sealing materials. The compounds have to comply to all necessary regulations like FDA, EC 1935/2004 and NSF. In addition they have to withstand the partly aggressive process and cleaning media as well as production conditions like temperatures, pressures etc.

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed numerous material variants of e.g. EPDM, Simriz®, FKM, VMQ, NBR, HNBR, POM, PU, PEEK and PTFE as well as special material groups like Fluoroprene® XP that are suitable for those challenges.


Preventing flavor transfer

Even if the great multiplicity of products, manufacturing processes and demands are given, one aspect is common to all the branches of the food and beverage industry: the cleaning of production and filling facilities with CIP/SIP processes. They involve high temperatures and aggressive cleaning media. The production of beverages especially involves the prevention of flavor transfer from one batch to the next, along with uncompromising hygiene.

Handling this challenging requirements profile first of all needs application-specific materials of the highest quality, along with an in-depth understanding of the processes that are employed. Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has a product and materials program especially designed for these different influencing factors. Fluoprene® XP is the mostly recommended material for hygienically demanding applications in the food and beverage industry. It has proven its suitability to minimize flavor transfer in numerous tests. In addition Fluoroprene® XP is characterized by an excellent resistance to a broad range of media, CIP/SIP agents and temperatures. It is resistant to polar and non-polar media at the same time. This in-depth material know-how is the basis for functionally reliable and durable sealing solutions.

Hygienic Design

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies offers specially developed seals and materials for applications conforming to Hygienic Design. A seal being designed to meet Hygienic Design standards is free of dead spaces to prevent contamination by microorganisms or residues from cleaning agents. This also results in a good cleanability and resistance to CIP/SIP cleaning media and conditions. Examples for sealing solutions for Hygienic Design applications are Hygienic Usit®, Radiamatic® HTS II 9539 VL, precision molded parts and many more.

 

Hygienic Usit® prevents germ formation

Hygienic Usit

One current example of many of Freudenberg’s hygienic solutions is the Hygienic Usit washer. Its outside sealing design prevents the formation of a breeding ground for bacteria under the screw head. The Hygienic Usit hermetically closes off the area between the screw head and the surface. Its geometry guarantees excellent cleanability of the connection. In this way, the washer provides the greatest possible safety in food production and minimizes the operator's service and maintenance work.

To meet all requirements, the Hygienic Usit is available in different materials. While the black EPDM 291 is the standard material, the white EPDM 253815 is mainly used for the pharmaceutical industry and the blue Fluoroprene® XP for the food industry.

A pump is an aggregate, used to convey liquids. Among the liquids are mixtures as well as liquids with solid and / or gas fractions. Separators and decanters work at extremely high rotational speeds to separate out solids and to dispose of these by means of submersible components or continuous feed through a screw conveyor.


In both systems, the rotating components which are also extremely heavy, need to be reliably sealed off. Furthermore, in a separator, components are shifted axially under high pressure to expel the solids. These components need to be really leak-tight against each other and against the housing respectively.


The rotating and axially shifting sealing points require top class seals and top class material. This is why Freudenberg Sealing Technologies uses elastomer materials of different degrees of hardness, depending on the load and the medium used. In the case of the highest mechanical loads, particularly in the area of the exit slits in separators, we offer particularly robust polyamides as the sealing material.

Homogenizers are used particularly in the food industry to improve the shelf life of products. Dynamic seals are the most important sealing element in these plunger pumps that are required to build up the pressure.

In principle, homogenizers are made up of a plunger pump to generate the pressure in the liquid and an adjustable expansion nozzle. The high pressure expansion disperses particles in the suspension, or drops in an emulsion, thus homogenizing them. In the food industry, homogenizers are used on a large scale to increase the shelf life of milk. Here, a piston pump is used to generate a high pressure of several 100 bar and the milk is squeezed through fine nozzles. While passing through the nozzle, the fat droplets are dispersed from approx. 20 µm to approx. 2 µm which makes the emulsion stable and stops the cream from rising.


For high pressure plunger pumps to work, dynamic seals are essential. Here, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies primarily uses V-Seal Set packings. But the most popular static sealing elements in the food industry, such as O-rings and molded parts, are also used in homogenizers.

In contrast to a conventional radial shaft seal, mechanical seals can also reliably seal against the shaft under very high pressures. Providing that a suitable secondary seal has been integrated, because due to the operating principle of the mechanical seal, additional sealing elements are required - which play just as important a part as the main slip surfaces of this sealing system.


The seal ring sliding axially on the shaft need to be sealed against the shaft. This can be done with an O-ring, a pressure sleeve or roll bellows. The counter ring also has to be sealed against the housing. An O-ring generally does the job here.


Freudenberg Sealing Technologies offers all necessary secondary seals in numerous different types of material, both as standard parts according to popular industrial standards and also in the shape of individually designed sealing elements.

Apart from piping, valves and accessories, fittings are an important component in pipelines. The connection between the pipe and the fitting can be made in several different ways. There are seal-free welding, brazing and glued joints, but also clamp connections, flange connections and screw couplings which need to be made secure from a sealing engineering point of view.


Depending on the type of fitting and the flowing medium, various sealing materials and shapes need to be considered. Only then is it possible to attain optimal sealing results and the associated system security. In this area, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies offers industry-specific solutions for a wide range of applications. In the chemical industry with large flow diameters, high temperatures and aggressive media this solution is provided by flange connections with a flat gasket, in the cosmetics industry and uncritical food and pharmaceutical applications, it is provided by dairy couplings or clamp connections. And for sensitive areas with stringent hygienic design requirements, our aseptic clamp connections in accordance with DIN 11864 are used.
