CCM for Electrolysis

CCM for Electrolysis

Catalyst-Coated Membranes (CCM) for PEM Electrolysis

PEM electrolysis enables the production of green hydrogen through the electrochemical splitting of water. The efficiency and service life of the electrolysis stack—and thus of the entire system—are largely determined by the catalyst-coated membrane, as this is where the key electrochemical reactions at the anode and cathode take place. Our Catalyst Coated Membranes (CCMs) combine a high-performance, long-lasting catalyst architecture with an industrially established roll-to-roll manufacturing process. The goal is to significantly reduce the precious metal loading while maximizing efficiency over the entire operating life cycle of up to 100,000 hours.

Benefits at a Glance

Proprietary catalyst technology based on metal salts instead of commercial catalysts for technical and commercial advantages.

Lower material costs and greater supply chain resilience through flexible precious metal sourcing.

Durable, highly reactive catalyst structures with minimal degradation.

Homogeneous particle sizes and distribution for maximum reactivity of the catalyst layer.

Roll-to-roll manufacturing with integrated quality monitoring according to automotive standards.

Flexible membrane integration and application-specific design.

CCM Roll Stock and Sheets for Electrolysis

Our Catalyst Coated Membranes (CCMs) are manufactured using a cost- and quality-optimized roll-to-roll production process. At the heart of this technology is a patented process that enables the use of cost-effective metal salts instead of commercial catalysts. This maximizes the reactive surface area of the catalyst layers while minimizing the use of precious metals. The result is high electrochemical efficiency combined with a significantly extended service life.

Freudenberg’s manufacturing technology is compatible with all common membrane types for PEM electrolysis.

Framed CCM for Electrolysis

Framed CCMs for Electrolysis

In addition to roll stock and sheets, Freudenberg also offers framed Catalyst Coated Membranes (CCMs). This concept combines Freudenberg’s many years of electrochemical expertise with its technological leadership in sealing technology. CCM sheets are embedded in a functionally integrated frame. Proprietary sealing materials ensure long-term protection of the active area while also facilitating stack assembly. The overall concept increases production and assembly efficiency and supports a long service life even under demanding operating conditions. All materials—including the CCM, the seal, and the carrier film—can be tailored to specific applications.

Manufacturing and Quality

Large industrial automated production machine used in manufacturing, electronics assembly, or pharmaceutical production line systems.

Modern and efficient production processes are a key prerequisite for the successful scaling of fuel cell systems. Freudenberg has many years of experience in this field and employs innovative manufacturing technologies, such as roll-to-roll production, to support industrial ramp-up and provide high-performance solutions for its customers.

The fast and cost-efficient roll-to-roll technology developed by the company covers the entire CCM and MEA value chain—from raw materials to the qualified end product. This enables high flexibility in material changes, a rapid response to supply chain challenges, and the efficient implementation of new regulatory requirements.

At the same time, the technology ensures high throughput with consistently high product quality. State-of-the-art production lines combined with integrated visual inspection systems ensure that all products meet the highest technical and economic standards.
